Como director del periódico Ahora permaneció en Madrid desde el inicio de los angeles guerra hasta finales de 1936, cuando el gobierno de l. a. República se traslada a Valencia y él come to a decision exilarse. l. a. solidaridad y compasión por quienes sufren en carne propia los horrores de l. a. guerra permiten a Chaves observar los acontecimientos de los angeles contienda con una equidistancia y una lucidez asombrosas. A sangre y fuego es sin duda una de las narraciones más inteligentes y llenas de vida de cuantas se han escrito sobre el tema; un verdadero clásico de l. a. literatura española.

Biografía del autor

Manuel Chaves Nogales (1897-1944) nació en Sevilla. Se inició muy joven en el oficio de periodista, primero en su ciudad natal y más tarde en Madrid. Entre 1927 y 1937, Chaves Nogales alcanzó su cénit profesional escribiendo reportajes para los principales periódicos de los angeles época, y ejerciendo, desde 1931, como director de Ahora, diario afín a Manuel Azaña de quien Chaves period reconocido partidario.

Al estallar los angeles guerra civil se pone al servicio de los angeles República y sigue trabajando como periodista hasta que el gobierno abandona definitivamente Madrid, momento en el que make a decision exilarse en Francia. los angeles llegada de los nazis, que describiría magistralmente en el ensayo La agonía de Francia, le obligó a huir a Londres, donde falleció a los forty seven años.

Además de brillante periodista es autor de una espléndida obra literaria entre los angeles que destacan sus libros sobre Rusia: los reportajes La vuelta a Europa en avión. Un pequeño burgués en los angeles Rusia roja (1929), Lo que ha quedado del imperio de los zares (1931) y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí (1934); los angeles biografía Juan Belmonte, matador de toros, su vida y sus hazañas, su obra más famosa, considerada una de las mejores biografías jamás escritas en castellano; y A sangre y fuego. Héroes, bestias y mártires de España (1937), impresionante testimonio de los angeles guerra civil donde denuncia las atrocidades cometidas por ambos bandos con una lucidez sorprendentemente adelantada a su tiempo.
